BRP Project discussion

  • Group G: Teresa, Tsinrong, Xin-Min
  • First hypothesis: If the type of water affects the survival of a pond-skater, then the pond-skater will survive best in pond water.
  • Revised hypothesis: Evaporation of water in relation to its acidity

Hypothesis feedback:
- Need to phrase the hypothesis with clear indication of the independent and dependent variables.
- refer to the format and example on the main BRP page.
- Animal proposed only found in pond. So not suitable to play with animal life here, so have to resubmit a new hypothesis!

Can we use aquatic plants instead of water?

Animals, not water. Sorry

Can we use hydrillas?

Teresa Ng said

If the amount if pollutant (detergent ) in the water decreases, then the chances of survival of the hydrilla are decreased.

You are saying that less pollutant means survival of hydrilla is worst? or the other way round? Not logical.
If the answer is obvious, more pollution, less chance of survival - not a suitable hypothesis.

Would paper chromatography relate to the topic of water?

If the amount of water that has evaporated is affected by the amount of acid in the water, then the more acid the water contains, the faster the rate of evaporation.

May I know what is the rationale or purpose of this topic? potential applications?
- quite a sound hypothesis
- dependent variable "acid the water contains" could be change to "acidity of water" or "pH of water", so second part is "more acidic the water" or "water with lower pH".

Feedback on project proposal:
1. include hypothesis
2. may need measuring cylinder for small amounts of lemon juice
3. what is the source of lemon juice? of consistent concentration?
4. timing for 2 h is long. Instead of repeating, use three sets of each type simultaneously - will help to overcome part of the limitation 2.
5. Also think of ways to minimize both limitations mentioned.

The amount of acid rain around the world is increasing. Acid rain makes the water in aquatic environments such as rivers and lakes acidic, causing harm to much of the aquatic life. Hence we would like to find out if and how the evaporation of the acidic water is affected by the acidity of the water, as if there is a major change in the rate of evaporation, it may affect the water cycle and hence, the ecosystem.

I see. Relevant rationale. Include in final report. Thank you.

Are we allowed to borrow apparatus like beakers and measuring cylinders from the science labs for the experiment?

Yes, simple inexpensive items.

Feedback on draft report:
1. the physical quantities (independent and dependent variables) mentioned throughout the experiment are not consistent.
hypothesis: acidity of water & amount of water evaporated (but acidity not measured?)
variables: amount of vinegar added, & amount of water evaporated
table: volume of vinegar & volume of liquid left
graph: amount of vinegar used & amount of solution used.
- please amend such that all indept and dept variables are described consistently with same words, e.g. volume instead of amount or acidity? solution, or liquid or water evaporated?
2. Graph: last point 80 is plotted wrongly?
3. Provide some description (or even measurements) of the environmental conditions during the experiments, e.g. temperature, timing of day, humidity etc.
4. Comments on results, the changes in values 197 - 199 appear to be too small to be significant? conclusion may not be reliable. or conclusion may be no significant change.
