Interestingly, ancient Babylonians may have calculated pi earlier.
The Egyptians may have calculated to 5 digits : 3.1605 for pi.
See http://www.exploratorium.edu/pi/history_of_pi/index.html , website of The Exploratorium is a museum of science, art, and human perception located in San Francisco, California.
